First step
First, click on the link provided to download Firefox. After downloading Firefox, drag and drop it into your Applications folder. The steps are slightly different for Linux and Windows users.
The magic of User.js!
Now let’s talk about the user.js file. This magical file configures various settings and optimizations for Firefox, making it more comfortable to use. The user.js file contains various settings and flags that can be used to configure Firefox applications. This is awesome! 🌟
In the open source project Arc Fox/user.js you can find many of these flags that will improve your browsing experience while protecting your privacy. For more information, see the arc-sync/folder repository. It’s a great compromise between comfort and privacy!
Configuration and Optimization
Next, let’s actually set up Firefox! Use Finder to go to a specific URL, or navigate directly to Applications and double-click Firefox. When you open Firefox for the first time, you’ll need to authorize the wizard that appears. Make sure Firefox is in your Dock and set it as your default browser. You don’t need to import anything from your previous browser.
If you don’t like the default colors, you can customize them to your liking. Additionally, if you don’t want Firefox to sync via its cloud storage, you can do two things: pause browsing or use a different browser to suit your desktop and mobile needs. It just depends on your preference!
Optimize your extension
Now let’s configure some extensions. The first thing you should consider is the Firefox multi-account container. This allows you to isolate different websites and cookies into specific containers. This is a powerful feature! Just install this extension.
Another extension you might want to install is Privacy Badger, which blocks all trackers. This extension was developed by the EFF Foundation and is a great tool. Also, if you trust EFF, make sure to allow private windows. They did nothing wrong!
Set your default search engine
To protect your privacy, it’s a good idea to change your default search engine. Open a new tab and click Firefox Settings. From there, navigate to the Search tab. Choose your preferred search engine, such as DuckDuckGo. You can also configure other options, such as: B. Allow notifications from certain websites (such as ProtonMail).
Configure container
Containers are an effective way to isolate a website and its cookies. For example, you might want to create a Google container to separate your Google activities. To configure this feature, you’ll go through a quick wizard that will walk you through setting up the extension according to your needs.
Synchronize and manage containers
Now let’s talk about synchronization. If you don’t want to use the cloud for syncing, Firefox VPN isn’t for you and you prefer to manage your own containers. Go to “Manage Containers”. Delete the placeholder container and create your own. For example, you could create a container called “Google” and give it a color such as red. Once you do this, every time you visit a specific website, it will always remain in that container. This means your tracking cookies are not shared with other websites!
