Hello and welcome to the UCSD Careers Event! The evening’s moderator and speaker is Vicki Krantz, director of business, science and technology programs at UCSD Extension. With us tonight is Phil Blair, President of ManpowerGroup. Here he shares his insights on career advice and answers your questions.
Phil’s background
In case you didn’t know, Phil Blair is the president of Manpower and a business partner of Mel Katz in San Diego The county operates a Manpower franchise. Manpower is currently San Diego’s fourth-largest employer with 3,500 employees. Phil is known for his expertise in recruitment and has written a book called Job One which provides valuable advice on job hunting and networking.
Phil’s motivation for writing this book
Phil wrote this book because he noticed that many of his friends and people he knew were struggling to find good jobs. He realizes that networking is the most effective way to find work in today’s economy and wants to share his insights with a wider audience. Phil believes that networking and making connections is key to landing your dream job.
Network and ideal career
When searching for your dream job, Phil recommends starting with an exercise to identify your ideal job and any limitations, such as location, family, education, or experience. People often need help when they are nervous or meeting a stranger, so networking is extremely valuable. Phil encourages people to reach out to others and make connections in their desired industry or area of interest.
Career Paths and Human Resources
When it comes to career paths, Phil recommends considering a variety of options. He recommends people write down three or four ideal career paths and then network with people working in those fields to get insights and advice. Phil believes that informational interviews are a great way to meet people in the HR world, and he recommends connecting with professionals like Claudia, who is attending the event tonight.
Temporary internship and learning opportunities

Build and manage your network

He recommends not making spelling or formatting errors, as these can leave a negative impression on recruiters. Additionally, it reminds job seekers to send a thank you note or email after the interview.
Interviews and Impressions
Phil recommends coming prepared for the interview and showing enthusiasm and a positive attitude. He recommends avoiding distractions during the interview, such as checking your phone or touching up your makeup. Phil also encourages candidates to ask thoughtful questions and show a genuine interest in the company and the position they are applying for. He advises against discussing negative experiences or speaking negatively about previous employers during interviews.
Move and manage your career within the company
If you’re planning an intra-company move, Phil recommends having a conversation with your manager and HR to explore your options. He believes it is important to express a desire for growth and ensure that one does not get stuck in one situation. Phil recommends taking courses, earning certificates, and building a great resume that demonstrates your commitment to learning and career advancement.
When to leave the company
While moving within a company can be a good option, Phil admits that sometimes you have to leave the company and find better options. If you feel like you’re stuck or unhappy in your current position, it might be time to start looking for a new job. Phil recommends remaining discreet and confidential when looking for a job to avoid reflecting negatively on your current employer.
